Machining of aluminum and its various alloys has an extremely sensitive position in today's advanced industries such as aerospace, automobile manufacturing, mold making, precision component manufacturing, and electronic equipment. One of the main and constant challenges of CNC operators and production engineers in the turning, milling and drilling processes of this metal is the undesirable phenomenon of color change, creation of dark spots and surface oxidation. To overcome this challenge and achieve a perfectly shiny, mirror-like and flawless surface, choosing the best soapy water for aluminum machining without black spots is the most critical decision in the production line. In the meantime, the use of fluids formulated by the reliable brand Ab Ram Aras as a standard and specialized solution has been able to fundamentally solve this industrial concern.
In this specialized article, we examine the different chemical and mechanical aspects of aluminum cooling and lubrication and explain the causes of spots, the ideal formulation, and the benefits of choosing the best soapy water for machining aluminum without black spots produced by the Ram Aras collection.
Why does aluminum machining need a special coolant?
Aluminum has unique physical and chemical properties that require special care when working with it. The melting point of this metal is lower than that of steel, and due to the heat caused by chipping, it quickly adheres to the edge of the tool or the accumulated edge (BUE). This phenomenon causes blurring of the work surface, tool breakage and a severe drop in dimensional accuracy. On the other hand, aluminum is an amphoteric metal; This means that it reacts and oxidizes quickly in very acidic and alkaline environments.
When conventional coolant with uncontrolled pH is applied to this metal, chemical reactions between water solutes, emulsion compounds and aluminum ions are initiated. The direct result of this process is the formation of dark oxide layers and matte black spots on the surface of the workpiece. For this reason, modern turning and milling workshops are required to use the best soapy water for machining aluminum without black spots to reduce the chemical reactions of the surface to zero.
The main causes of black spots on aluminum parts in machining
Knowing the roots of oxidation helps to understand why stable formulations are chosen. Black spots and cloudiness of the surface of parts after turning and washing are caused by several factors, the most important of which are:
Imbalance in the amount of alkalinity or pH of the cooling liquid: Most of the ordinary soapy water has a high pH between 9.2 and 9.8 to prevent rusting of steel and the growth of bacteria. This level of alkalinity is harmful to aluminum and destroys the surface bonds of the metal and produces dark spots. The best soapy water for aluminum machining without black spots should be fully buffered and have a pH in the controlled range of about 8.5 to 9.0 so that both bacteria are controlled and the metal is not oxidized.
Improper water quality and the presence of hard salts: the high hardness of the water used, especially the presence of calcium, magnesium and chlorine ions, causes severe staining and galvanic corrosion on the work piece. Soluble oil should have excellent emulsion stability against water hardness.
Using improper compressible (EP) additives: Some cooling oils contain active sulfur or free chlorine. These compounds are suitable for machining hard steels, but they react with the aluminum surface and leave dark sulphide compounds and black permanent spots.
Long-lasting liquid on the part after the process: If the emulsion does not contain specific corrosion inhibitors for non-ferrous metals, the gradual evaporation of water on the surface of the part will leave corrosive chemical deposits and permanent stains. The definitive solution to this problem is to use anti-stain lubricants.
Vital features of the best soapy water for aluminum machining without black spots
A special industrial cooling and lubricating fluid for aluminum must have specific technical specifications and standards to guarantee the highest efficiency:
Contains specific inhibitors and inhibitors of aluminum corrosion (Passivators): by forming an invisible protective layer in nano dimensions on the part, these compounds prevent corrosive ions from hitting the metal surface and maintain the shine of the part.
Extraordinary lubrication properties with synthetic base oil and vegetable esters: Aluminum requires high boundary lubrication to avoid sticking to diamond or carbide cutting tools. Smooth lubrication causes quick removal of chips and polishing of the part.
Biological stability and resistance to spoilage and stench: A high-quality emulsion should not undergo biphasing and loss of quality due to stagnation or the passage of time. The long life of the coolant greatly reduces the side costs of replacing the tank.
Anti-foaming and suitable for high-pressure pumps: In sending the liquid through the center of the spindle (Thru-Spindle Coolant), non-foaming of the liquid is very important to maintain direct contact of the liquid with the tool.
All these engineering standards are included in the special Ram Aras products so that the workshops can continue to produce parts without worrying about color change or quality loss.
Comparison of mineral, semi-synthetic and fully synthetic soluble oils for aluminum
Coolants are generally classified into three categories, each having a different effect on aluminum machining:
Full synthetic fluids (clear solution): these fluids provide excellent cooling and good visibility to the operator and do not contain oil; But due to the soapy nature and weaker boundary lubrication compared to natural oils, they may lead to chip sticking to the tool in the machining of soft aluminum alloys.
Semi-Synthetic microemulsion fluids: This type is known as the best soapy water for aluminum machining without black spots in global standards. These products offer the perfect balance of high cooling, excellent lubrication with ester lubricants, ultra-fine emulsion particles, easy washability and relative clarity. Ab Ram Aras specialty products for aluminum are formulated based on this advanced semi-synthetic structure to achieve the best surface quality.
Investigating sensitive aluminum alloys and how to treat them
Aluminum alloys are not the same in machining. Different series require specific performance accuracy in fluid selection:
2000 and 7000 series alloys (such as 7075): these alloys have high strength and are used in aerospace industries. Due to the presence of zinc and copper, they are highly sensitive to spot corrosion and change color quickly without specific inhibitor liquid.
6000 series alloys (such as 6061): the most widely used alloy in general part manufacturing that requires stable emulsion and smooth lubrication to maintain clarity and achieve low Ra level quality.
4000 and 5000 series casting alloys with a high percentage of silicon: the presence of silicon causes rapid tool wear. High fluid lubrication is the first priority here to avoid heat and sticking.
Specialized products Ram Aras covers the entire range of alloys and guarantees stain-free performance in the most difficult turning conditions.

Golden guidelines for the storage and use of aluminum soap water
Even with the choosing best soapy water for aluminum machining without black spots, adherence to workshop principles of fluid maintenance is essential for continued quality:
The correct way to mix: always add thick oil to water slowly and stir; Never add water to oil to obtain a homogeneous and stable emulsion.
Optimum concentration percentage (Brix): The suitable percentage for aluminum machining is usually between 6 and 9%. A concentration of less than 5% causes a loss of lubrication and the possibility of tools rusting, and very high concentrations make washing more difficult in addition to wasting materials. Use a refractometer to measure the concentration daily.
Elimination of hydraulic oils and tramp oil: Stray oils leaked from the CNC machine float on the surface of the emulsion and block the path of oxygen, which leads to the growth of anaerobic bacteria and a drop in pH. It is necessary to use an oil skimmer.
Washing and cleaning the tank before refilling: When changing the coolant, disinfect the tank and pipes with the system washing solution so that the old bacteria do not contaminate the new emulsion.
